In consultation with the ACT Emergency Service Agency (ACT ESA) and ACT Rural Fire Service (ACT RFS), the Directorate annually reviews its bushfire arrangements and prepares an information package for each bushfire season. This includes a list of schools which have been identified for ‘temporary’ closure under an elevated fire danger rating.

Bushfire Preparedness

Schools should conduct annual bushfire preparedness activities between August and September of each year in preparation for the bushfire season which has been declared to commence on the 1 October 2019.

The Directorate conducts a review of all schools in preparation for the bushfire season. For inquires in relation to environmental preparedness activities please contact Infrastructure and Capital Works on Ext 78831.

For information in relation to this package, emergency management plans or the “Temporary Closure of Schools” Policy contact Security and Emergency Management on 62071974.
The Bushfire Preparation Package includes information for all ACT public schools on bushfire preparedness and implications of the declaration made by the ACT Emergency Services Agency of Severe, Extreme or Catastrophic fire danger rating and Total Fire Ban (TOBAN).

SEVERE - fire danger rating and TOBAN will invoke temporary closure of two public schools on these days.

EXTREME - fire danger rating means fire will threaten suddenly and without warning. It will be uncontrollable, unpredictable and fast moving. Six public schools are identified to temporarily close in an extreme fire danger rating.

CATASTROPHIC - fire danger rating means fire will threaten suddenly and without warning. It is likely be uncontrollable, unpredictable and very fast moving. Seven public schools and three non-government schools, are identified to temporarily close in a catastrophic fire danger rating.

The Education Directorate ‘Temporary Closure of Schools’ policy focuses on temporary closure of schools. All other schools not identified should be on high alert on such days and be prepared to close if necessary.

Further information during the bushfire season is available on the ACT Emergency Services Agency website.
